Dean muore pochi minuti dopo il letale impatto. Nella sua ultima intervista, rilasciata pochi giorni prima, l’attore invitava a guidare con cautela: vista la sua morte improvvisa, la Warner Bros. non manderà mai in onda il video. James Dean – alias James Dean – the collar of his coat turned up in New York: Images which have collaborated on building a myth – the image of eternal and misunderstood youth. Unlike Marlon Brando, the proletarian rebel with identifiable goals, James Dean was the timeless and androgynous youthful rebel. His death on the Interstate 46 leads us back to 1950s America, a time when youth was re-interpreted all anew. The USA was looking for its profile: While the McCarthy-hysteria was reactivating the tough patriar-chal America, the internal social fabric was determining its course for “Big Mama“. All of this followed a general “psychologicalisation” of all spheres of life: Authenticity, truth and rebellion turned into values attributed to youth and also revolutionised the Hollywood studios. James Dean played himself – but like no one else before he also produced himself. It was through this that he was turned into an icon of a media created youth culture, the shadow of which is still hanging over us today. Excerpts of James Dean’s three films, behind the scenes footage, archive from 1950s America and original photos will merge with the newly shot material tracking the phenomenon James Dean in present day New York, Fairmount and California.

Jett Rink is a great rise-and-fall story, embodied by a 24-year old Dean in his swan song. He would infamously die just 2 weeks after wrapping up his scenes for this HUGE movie.

Cinemascope - I rapporti di forza all'interno della stessa inquadratura si fecero maggiormente significanti, la dilatazione delle distanze nel piano assunse rilevanza simbolica. "La valle dell'Eden" ("East of Eden", Elia Kazan, 1955; Warner Bros.) organizzava la precaria relazione tra i vari personaggi proprio sull'esasperazione delle distanze all'interno della composizione dell'inquadratura. In particolare, il disegno di Kazan si concentrò soprattutto sul complicato rapporto tra il protagonista Cal (James Dean) e il padre Adam (Raymond Massey), dilatando le ipotetiche linee di collegamento tra i due sfruttando il formato del Cinemascope in tutta la sua lunghezza. Cal salito sulla cima di un capannone con una sigaretta accesa, in alto lungo il margine sinistro, il padre in piano ravvicinato, lungo il margine destro, pronto a redarguirlo per l'imprudenza che sta commettendo; Cal seduto a capotavola sul lato sinistro, svogliato lettore di versetti sacri, il padre dalla parte opposta a biasimare il suo atteggiamento, in mezzo lo schienale di una sedia e alcune bottigliette di olio e aceto a separare anche graficamente le due posizioni, erano entrambi esempi di questa inclinazione della messa in scena. Più articolato il disegno rappresentato durante la festa a sorpresa per il compleanno del padre: tra Cal posto sul margine destro e il padre collocato su quello sinistro, c'è Abra, la fidanzata di Aron, il fratello prediletto, a rappresentare un momento di apparente armonia. L'illusione si rompe immediatamente con l'arrivo di Aron, che si pone sulla soglia dell'abitazione, posizionandosi, in profondità, tra il padre e il fratello. Aron, annunciando, inattese, le prossime nozze con Abra, sta per rovinare la sorpresa accuratamente preparata da Cal (che vuole rifondere il padre dal debito patito con un affare sbagliato per conquistarne la stima e l'affetto) e per scatenare il dramma che, a causa della reazione dello stesso Cal, sconvolgerà la famiglia. Verso la fine del mese di settembre del 1955, durante le riprese del suo secondo film Americano “Serenade”, girato a fianco di Mario Lanza, incontro’ negli studi cinematografici della Warner Bros: James Dean il quale stava terminando le riprese del film “Il gigante”. Queste rare foto, ritraggono james Dean con Sara Montiel e sono le ultime foto dell’attore prima della sua scomparsa avvenuta dopo pochissimi giorni da quell’incontro. Esattamente 62 anni fa: il 30 Settembre del 1955 James Dean, a bordo della sua Porsche 550 Spyder, perse la vita nel tragico incidente stradale di Cholame in California.
